What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
