The Prime Minister's very notable tilt on the Britain's post-Brexit relations to the bloc recently was intended to communicate to business, to EU officials, and to European partners, in addition to his political supporters.

An Altered Approach for Relations

A leading commercial body last month released a comprehensive series of new proposals in different fields to aid exporters overcome post-Brexit red tape that has hampered the trade of goods.

Its member poll found that a large proportion of business members believed that the UK-EU trade deal was impeding commercial success.

A number of other areas could, feasibly, see a parallel method – alignment with single market rules – in exchange for reducing post-Brexit barriers across industry, in automotive, industrial chemicals, or for example in VAT procedures.

Continental Perception

EU governments were disappointed by the lack of ambition in the previous recalibration, specifically the British rejection of proposals floated by some commentators regarding the virtual readmission of British exports to the internal market.

The exact terms on electricity and agricultural regulations is yet to be settled. A plan for UK companies to be involved in a €150bn security initiative has been delayed over the scale of the contribution, after some objections from Paris. a non-EU country has entered the programme.

Broader Context

The UK has agreed a deal to rejoin a student mobility programme and to discuss a youth mobility program. This has paved the way for subsequent negotiations.

Some UK insiders say that the issuing of a American national security strategy has altered the backdrop on UK ties to the EU.

The strategy stated that the US would "encourage pushback" to Europe's current trajectory and applauded the "growing influence" of nationalist groups.

In government circles, there is some recognition that the rapidly changing world has shifted once more.

Home Calculations

On the national stage, the governing party also expects being outflanked on Brexit by one opposition party, but potentially a further party, which is targeting its key electoral areas in May's elections.
