The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Killer.
The pair of scholars who died in the recent violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the only individual detained in connection in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, family members said.
His name was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine other people were wounded in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”
