The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
