The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
