It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
