Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers invaded the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in recent months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
