The Gunners' boss remains confident that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

Havertz has been absent since the summer after undergoing an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when stepping up his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“Our experience helped us build a squad that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Remain

Further fitness issues involve defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on new players in the last transfer window has resulted in a far better place to navigate such unavailability.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

When asked if more options was benefiting their championship push, his response was positive. “Yes, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the situation with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we must deploy players in different positions, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Speaking about the setback noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it appears like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, in my view, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”

“His availability record is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back around the team playing because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
