Fury Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism
Figures from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Party
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
