From Struggling to Imperfect – Is There Any Team Actively Seeking to Secure the NFL Championship In the Current Year?

No professional sports organization promotes parity in the manner of the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following the first ten matchups of this season, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the bulk of franchises are merely sufficient.

Clear Picture in NFC

Within the National Football Conference, at least, there is some clarity. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) appear to be the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and secured overwhelming triumphs during Sunday's action. The Eagles with six wins even with their challenges continue to possess a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, comparable to the Packers (5-2-1). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), despite their uneven performances in trench play and navigating coaching drama, have proven they're capable of dominating strong franchises. Regarding these five teams, it's straightforward to construct a championship trajectory.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Over in the AFC, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) along with Pittsburgh (5-4). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The traditional powers, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, display either glaring roster weaknesses or have been hit by injuries.

Parity Mechanics

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing the current division frontrunners within the conference remains somewhat odd. Areas of each team suggest title potential, yet not completely. If you were asked to commit to your AFC title game selections at this moment, could you assuredly select any one of these four teams?

Squad Examinations

Indianapolis Colts

First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to complete disaster level. But the last two weeks have raised concerns. He’s back to giving away possessions and struggling against pressure. He took seven sacks facing Atlanta on Sunday, and endured a brief period where he delivered a pick and fumbled three times. This comes after he committed turnovers five times facing the Steelers.

The Colts attack performed well initially since Jones evaded the disaster plays. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line mean the Colts are capable of overcoming periodic mistakes, like their German performance. Yet Jones going back to his old blunder-prone days would finish postseason aspirations.

New England Analysis

New England appears somewhat similar. A year ago, they were a punchline. Now, they’re football's most unexpected success and the hottest team across the league following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for committing turnover errors a contest they should have won against Pittsburgh, they'd possess at 9–1 with the best record. In the prior year, they were old and slow. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the least challenging lineup across the NFL, and there have still been cracks. Their quarterback has taken sacks thirty-five times – among the highest totals – with several hits he suffered last weekend appeared dangerous. Over time, that punishment compounds.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold 8–2 as well, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. The Denver signal-caller has shown inconsistency, and the offense plodding, with the defense doing most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. Los Angeles remains nearby in the AFC West with seven wins, but the injuries within their blocking corps will make it tough to achieve championship contention.

Pittsburgh Situation

And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning the Northern division even after suffering a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. They have a negative point differential, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions at this stage of his career continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have narrowed within a game of the Steelers, but how rapidly this occurred is an indictment of Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. The fact Baltimore began with a 1-5 record yet still appear they should win the division is telling about the conference as a whole.

Historical Favorites

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who could still create the greatest concern in opposing teams if they qualified. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Analysis

A week ago, Buffalo was celebrating following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't merely fall versus the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in several seasons.
