Addressing the Store Clerk Who Left Me Absolutely Speechless – My Hat's Off to You
It was a day of rest, and I felt in a foul mood, filling up my mother's vehicle. It was a typical gas station that also functions as a grocery store, which often leads of waiting behind customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. This is a dreadful thing to occur when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Dreadful.
Fourth in line I stood in the queue. A single person serving, a female attendant. A peculiar quality to her presence. When the faffer at the first position had finally paid for his purchases, his pastry, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me overhearing the cashier wish him a wonderful day. Odd. Could be I misunderstood, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. I wondered if perhaps she was a comrade in my battle with dithering, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down people just getting gas including me.
Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of the queue discharged her fuel-only transaction with impressive quickness. Again, the phrase came: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” No, actually, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals tells people a wonderful day, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find people from America knocking around Stourbridge, least of all working in petrol stations or other places.
Second in line at last. After an elderly lady dealing with a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her food items, her handbag and her membership pass. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well received the wish an excellent day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by cracking a joke to her, to see if she did that response their typical stare, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a funny comment to say.
Ultimately, I accepted the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, which amounts to identical in effect – while she stared straight at me, deep into my soul, and wished me to have a great day. It improved my mood. Beneficial indeed.
